The Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show
The 2008 Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show took place this year on March 20th at Mohawk Valley Community College in the Information Technology Building. The show is a jeopardy-style alcohol and other drug education program that reaches over 30,000 middle school students, their families and friends with a positive no-use message toward alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. The teams competed for great prizes, while having alot of fun and enjoying good food. The event was a great success! We would like to thank all of the participants and volunteers, we couldn't do it without you!
The students study informational materials, and then compete with other teams from our county. Winners from our county go on to compete with schools across the state at the New York State Regional Play-offs. Clinton Middle School won the 2008 Oneida County competition, and went on to the Regionals! Congratulations to all of the students who participated in the Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show at the local, regional and state levels of competion. Great job!
If you are interested in signing your school up for this year's competition, donating or volunteering for the 2009 Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show, please call 733-1709, or email Ginny Pry, Rite Aid Drug Quiz Show Regional Coordinator, at info@mvcaa.org

Activities and Programs... |
Local After-School/ Summer Programs In
The Mohawk Valley
This year, the Council has run a wide variety of prevention programs. These programs have included after-school programs at Kernan Elementary, and The Neighborhood Center in Utica. We implemented "Life Skills Program" this year. Life Skills is a science-based prevention program aimed at reducing and preventing drug/alcohol use while improving social and communication skills. Research conducted over 20 years has shown that this program has cut tobacco, alcohol, and marijuana use by up to 75%. It has been proven effective with all races and ages. The program not only educates children about the dangers of drugs/alcohol, but also teaches the children valuable "life skills" to use in their future!
Summer of 2008 will be exciting for the Council! We are implementing our Summer Prevention Art Project, with a grant received for the Community Arts Council. We will be running summer programs at Kernan Elementary, The Neighborhood Center, Boys and Girls Club, and the Upward Bound Program. All groups will be taught about alcohol/drug use, social skills, communication, and the consequences surrounding alcohol/drug use. They will also help in creating our Community Puzzle Project, "Putting the Pieces Together to Build a Drug-free Community".
We also participated in Last year's 2007 United Way Coloring Contest this year, which was a blast! The theme for this year's contest was, "what makes you happy?". We turned in over 100 entries from Neighborhood Center, St.Martin's, and The Boys and Girls Club! Six-year old, Rubymar Nazanio from The Neighborhood Center was awarded the first prize winner! She won a huge bad of art supplies donated by Hummel's Office Supplies! Her design was printed on 5,000 magnets distributed by United Way! Way to go Rubymar!
The I.D.ECIDE Campaign
The council in collaboration with Mohawk Valley Community College and the New York State Office of Alcoholism and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS) has launched a campaign that is designed to curb underage drinking on college campuses. The message is “I.D.ECIDE”. This campaign will empower students to make the right choices and help to change attitudes and behaviors related to drinking. Not drinking until the legal age and choosing not to drink are responsible options for youth.
